Massive magma reservoir found beneath Tuscany

Why it matters

Seismic sensors revealed an underground magma system of roughly 6,000 cubic kilometres beneath Tuscany, with no surface warning signs at all. The absence of a visible signal said nothing about what was underneath. A neat reminder that some things have to be measured rather than inferred.
